Di nuovi orizzonti

Beware: this post's just a stream of random consciousness

I'm finally back on this blog after a while.. Exam session is now over and I can finally focus on something more interesting and motivating. New classes started today and I immediately fell in love with the brand new Northern Literatures and cultures course, which seems to be exactly what I needed to complete my knowledge about Scandinavian and Scandinavish countries. It's been announced that we're gonna learn even some Icelandic phonology and vocaboulary, an awesome news for anybody (read: me) who's struggling at the moment with Faroese and its tricky letters and sounds. It's pretty obvious that those languages are not so different, but I'm still more attracted by Faroese than by Icelandic, I can't explain why. And now that I've unexpectedly gained some Faroese gentlefriends, my studies are developing well, not so quickly but in an interesting way at least, thank to their help also. I must admit, I didn't expected Faroese folks to be so gentle and kind, even with someone who they've hardly met once. After years of Icedudes & Räikkönen behaving people (Finns, Y U SO SHY?), finding some open and casual people it's a good way to start the new year. They make me happy, despite all the shit going on (read: unpaid internships, lack of money and motivations and tons of other stuff).

To sum up, foreign languages and music (ahn, new pretty stuff is to come here, check my other blog) are helping me hold the balance, as always, and the fact I can still fall in love with a new language is a clear indication my brain still has some empty space. I wasn't so sure about that..

Faroese (left) vs Icelandic (right)

29/02 update: Faroese is way better than Icelandic! It seems that the latter language sounds not so elegant to my ears. Still interesting, but probably it's not gonna enter my top10 list of foreign languages..

02/03 update: just started doing some proper listening exercises with Faroese. I'm still better understanding through reading than through listening.. might be a problem soon?
